![]() Decades after the dark events at the Overlook Hotel, Dan Torrance remains traumatised after his experience as a young boy and is keen to drink away his fears and special ability. When a young girl, who's ability is more powerful than his, reaches out to him, a new story unfolds... Following on from one of the most unique horror films of all time "The Shining", this next chapter had big expectations to accommodate to. My expectations were very high especially, because "The Shining" is one of my favourite horror films ever so I wanted it to the storyline justice. I wouldn't say "Doctor Sleep" is your classic horror movie - at least not like the film movie was. However, this film opens up a whole other level to "The Shining" and makes you somewhat answer the questions many of us were left after watching the film or reading the book. There was a lot of hype surrounding this film- promotional posters and adverts popping up everywhere, so when I went to see it I was desperate to see if it lived up to the hype. In my opinion, it lived up to all the hype and was definitely worth the wait, and here's why. The cast and performanceEwan McGregor starred as the grown up Dan Torrance, and his performance was everything and more! He showed Dan's deep torment with his past and his shine in such an emotional performance. The whole cast shined with amazing talent, and really brought the storyline back to life. However, "Doctor Sleep" starred lots of new characters such as Abra Stone, played by the young star Kyliegh Curran. She was so impressive by the way she embodied her character. Abra was the perfect person to tie together all the loose ends from the first film, as well as giving more depth to the storyline. Along with Abra, Rose the Hat was introduced to give another dimension in "The Shining" universe. Rebecca Ferguson did an incredible job to make the audience feel disgusted and fearful of Rose, who created an gang that lived off people's shine.. literally. All the actors opened up the storyline even more, to reveal the truth behind the events in the first film. The links with "The Shining"Alongside the cast, the CGI, scenery and music played a huge part in giving the audience the chills. The music especially. Like wow. I felt like I was watching "The Shining" all over again. The music in places was the exact same (or very similar) that featured in the first film, which created those distinctive links between both films. It added to the suspense and anticipation which is definitely what needs to happen in a horror film. The camera work of the much anticipated scenes in the Overlook Hotel were similar- If not the same too. Even showing the drive through the snowy mountains at night, to the hotel was practically the same as in the first film.
There were lots of Easter eggs during the return to The Overlook hotel, that linked to the first film. Up to this point, the film brought so much originality and depth to the storyline. Without any spoilers, there were parts where Danny was a mirror image of his father Jack. "Doctor Sleep" really intensified all the anxieties and emotion Danny felt as a child. It was really strange but amazing to see how Ewan McGregor really embodied Jack Torrance's craziness that was shown in the first film. I definitely think it was worth Dan going back to The Hotel. Overall, this film was definitely not one of those films where you had wished they hadn't done a sequel. I came out the cinema understanding so much more of "The Shining" and why things happened in the first film. Yet, it embodied it's own originality of a psychological thriller, gave more depth to Dan, and the whole aspect of people's ability to shine. If you are a fan of psychological thriller/horror films and you love "The Shining", get watching "Doctor Sleep"! See ya'll real soon for another blog post, coming this Friday. Lidia x
